Drunk on a dime

I get it. You're young, you're in a foreign land...you want to get shitfaced, it's only natural! but there is a certain art to getting wasted while you're away. I have been drunk in 14 countries now and I have painfully learned a few things...

1. IT'S EXPENSIVE!! The exchange rate alone will kill you, so tread softly and drink wisely. You might want to go to that hip club all the Barcelonians are raving about, and you can, but that doesn't mean you have to buy a 10 Euro beer. Go to a supermarket or an off License before your night begins and drink in the hostel or on the journey to the club. Also, don't take more money with you then you're willing to spend. Bringing your ATM card out in Prague will result in a $500 night, trust me, I know.
2. Don't be retarded. If you are in a strange city with Bobby and Molly, and Bobby is so drunk he starts crying and Molly is puking on a war monument, its best that at least you have your wits about you. Take turns staying at least somewhat sober. I know it's boring and lame, but getting mugged is way lamer.
3. Don't know where to go? Ask the people at the hostel. If they are locals they know whats up and that can make a huge difference. Occasionally you may get luck and stumble into a cool dive bar randomly but the chances are slim to none so just ask around. You may look like a nerdy tourist, but its a small price to pay.
4. Beware of bar crawls. It will happen to you. You will be sight-seeing during the day and a handsome young guy or girl will come up to you advertising the sickest, coolest bar crawl EVER!!! Only 40 Euro!!! Look, these can be fun, but they are ridiculously expensive, you are usually not given free drinks at every bar, and you will be with 35 other American/Canadian frat boys trying to recreate Eurotrip.
5. Know how to get home. No one wants to be lost at 4am. Know what bus/subway/ or at the very least the number of a cab before you start drinking. Preparation is so boring, but sometimes it's worth it.

Cheers for beers!!
